Dear Parents:

Summer reading is important for a student to develop and maintain skills. With this in mind, upcoming 5th grade students are required to read the following book this summer:

Summer of the Swans (Betsy Byars)

Here are some other books your child may enjoy reading this summer:

The Borrowers (Norton)
The Great Brain (Fitzgerald)
Pepper mints in the Parlor (Wallace)

The attached book report format is only required for Summer of the Swans. The report will be due the first day of school.

Our required reading list for the school year (2009-2010) is as follows:

Number the Stars (Lois Lowry)
Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days (Stephen Manes)
Island of the Blue Dolphins (Scott O'Dell)
Old Yeller (Fred Gipson)

We will read two books each semester.
