Scholarship Opportunities from Organizations by Deadlines

Horatio Alger Scholarship – Requirements include minimum 2.0 GPA and critical financial need.  Visit www.horatioalger.org/scholarships for more information.  Deadline: October.

Outstanding Students of America – Students must have a 3.0 GPA to qualify for this scholarship.  Each winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship that may be used at the college of the student’s choice.  Visit their website at www.outstandingstudentsofamerica.com.  Deadline: October.

Coca Cola Scholars Foundation - Coca Cola offers 50-$5000 and 200-$1000 scholarships, both renewable for 4 years.  Selection is based on character, personal merit, and background, which are demonstrated through leadership, community volunteer work, activities and academic achievement.  Applications are available at www.coca-colascholars.org.  Deadline:  October

Toyota Community Scholars Scholarship – Must be nominated by the school. Each school is allowed one nominee.  Student should demonstrate strong academics, leadership qualities and community service.  Deadline: December.

AXA Achievement Scholarship – Awards 52-$10,000 and 10-$15,000 scholarships to students who are well rounded, determined to succeed and have demonstrated achievement at a job, sport, or extracurricular activity.  For an application and more information visit www.axa-achievement.com.  Deadline: December.

Burger King Scholars – Awarding 1600 $1000 scholarships.  Requirements include minimum 2.5 GPA and working an average of 15 hours per week.  Visit www.bkscholars.scholarshipamerica.org for more information.  Deadline: December.

Alabama Cattlemen’s Foundation – Offerings are varied in amount.  Requirements include being a son/daughter of ACA member.  Visit www.bamabeef.org for information.  Deadline: December.

Washington Crossing Foundation – This program provides scholarships for students planning careers in government service.  Amounts ranging from $1,500 to $10,000 are available nationwide.  The deadline is January.  You can access additional information and application instructions at www.gwcf.org under the “applicants” section. 

Wal-mart Scholarships – Offers $2000, with more going to children of Wal-mart employees.  Visit www.scholarshipadministrators.net for more information.  Local store number-1462.  Deadline: January.

Sam Walton Community Scholarship- scholarships offered for first year of undergraduate study. Must NOT be an associate or child of an associate of Wal-Mart or Sam's Club. Visit www.walmartfoundation.org for more information. Deadline January.

Key Club International Scholarship – Requirements include being an officer of the Key Club, minimum 3.5 GPA, and 100 Key Club service hours.  Amounts are varied.  Visit www.keyclub.org for more information.  Deadline:  February.

Best Buy Scholarships – Offering 2-$2000 and 1-$1000 awards.  For information, visit www.bestbuy.scholarshipamerica.org.  Deadline:  February.

Jimmy Rane Scholarship – Based on need, renewable.  For more information, visit www.jimmyranefoundation.org. Deadline: February.

American Cancer Society – Offers $1000 scholarship per academic year.  Requirements include being a cancer survivor, minimum 2.5 GPA, and writing a goal statement in 500 words or less.  When available, applications will be in the guidance office.

Camellia Communications – Must write an essay.  Contact number 548-2101.  Deadline:  February.

Exchange Club of Greenville – Offers a cash scholarship and recognition as Butler County’s Youth of the Year.  Must submit essay.  Contact Abbie Jackson at 382-5801 or 406-5801 for more information.  Deadline:  February.

Alabama Bankers Association – Offers a $1000 Essay Scholarship.  Essay must be 400 words or less.  Visit www.alabamabankers.org for more information.  Deadline:  March

Dr. Donald L. Mock Scholarship- Parents must be a ful-time employee of an Alabama bank..

Dixie Softball, Inc. Scholarship – Offers scholarships to females who have participated in a Dixie softball program (fast pitch).  For more information, contact the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department.  Deadline: March.

Dixie Youth Baseball, Inc. Scholarship – Awards scholarships to males who have participated in a Dixie youth baseball program (years 12 and under).  Contact the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department for more information.  Deadline:  March.

Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship – The school may nominate up to two students for this scholarship.  The program awards $1500 scholarships to approximately 15 high school graduates in each of Alabama’s seven United States congressional districts.  Deadline:  March.

Butler Baptist Association Scholarship- The Bobbi Wallace/ Allison Skinner Scholarship is available to females entering college as a freshman. The Haygood Scholarship is available for any student who will be entering ministerial study. Must be a member of a Butler Baptist Association Church. Dixie Boys Baseball, Inc Scholarship – Offers scholarship to males who have participated in Dixie boys (ages 13-14), Dixie pre-majors (ages 15-16), or Dixie majors (ages 15-18).  Visit www.dixie.org or contact the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department for more information.  Deadline:  March.

Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program – Awards 68 regional scholarships in the amount of $1000 plus 10 national scholarships of $5000 to students with outstanding community service.  Visit www.kohlscorporation.com or call 1-800-837-1500 for more information.  Deadline:  March.

Pioneer Electric Cooperative Foundation – Amount of $1000.  Must be a child of a Pioneer Electric Cooperative member.  Contact Linda Horn at 382-6636 for more information.  Deadline:  March.

Baptist Health Care Foundation – Varied amounts and requirements. Applicants parent(s) must work for the Babtist Health Care Systems.  Call 273-4567 for more information.  Deadline:  March.

Unicel H.S. Heroes Scholarship – Based on community service.  For more information, visit www.unicel.com.  Deadline:  March.

Montgomery-Lowndes Alumni Chapter of the U of AL – Amounts vary.  Requirements include attending the University of Alabama and being a resident of Montgomery or Lowndes County.  Deadline:  April.

Camellia City Civitan Club - $1000 scholarship.  Forms will be available in the guidance office.  Deadline: May.

Butler County Farmers Federation – Requirements include having a parent or grandparent as a member of the Alabama Farmers Federation and being a graduate of a high school in Butler County.  Deadline:  April.

Fort Deposit Arts Council – Must be a resident of Fort Deposit or the greater Fort Deposit community.  Contact Wanna Greene at 227-8864.  Deadline: April.

The Harrington Foundation College Scholarship – Available to students who are registered in the Kuder Career Planning Program.  Visit www.kuder.com or www.theharringtonfoundation.org for more information.  Deadline:  March.

First Methodist Church of Greenville Scholarships – The Van Odom Gillem and Sara Lou Beeland Scholarships are offered through the church.  Contact The First Methodist Church of Greenville for more information.

Three Arts Club of Georgiana and Chapman – Must be a female residing in the Georgiana area.  Deadline:  April.

Stonewall Jackson Memorial Fund - $1000-$2000 renewable scholarship.  Must submit an essay of at least 1500 words relating to some aspect of the life of Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson and a 100-word statement on the importance of receiving the scholarship.  Contact number 334-242-4363.  Deadline:  April.

National Wild Turkey Federation – Local chapters award $500.  Winners are eligible for consideration for the state award of $1000.  Contact NWTF by calling 1-803-637-3106 or visit www.nwtf.org for more information.  Deadline: April.

Alabama Law Foundation - The Alabama Law Foundation sponsors the Kid's Chance Scholarship Fund.  They provide scholarships for students who have had a parent killed or permanently and totally disabled in an on-the-job accident.  Please visit www.alfinc.org to download an application.  Deadline:  May.

American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship Program – For students who are sons, daughters, grandsons, or granddaughters of veterans of WW I, WW II, Korean, or Viet Nam and who are residents of Alabama.  Students must attend institutions with on-campus housing.  Forms are available from the American Legion, Department Headquarters/American Legion Auxiliary, 120 North Jackson Street, Montgomery, AL 36104, (334) 262-1176.  Deadline:  May.

American Legion Scholarship Program – For students who are sons, daughters, grandsons, or granddaughters of veterans of WW I, WW II, Korean, or Viet Nam and who are residents of Alabama.  Students must attend a public post secondary institution in Alabama.  Forms are available from the Department of Adjutant, The American Legion, Post Office Box 1069 Montgomery, AL 36192, (334) 262-6683.  Deadline:  May.

Butler County Alumni Chapter for Troy University - $500 scholarship.  Must be unconditionally admitted to Troy, have a minimum of 2.75 GPA, and be a graduate of a high school in Butler County.  Deadline:  May.

W. O. Parmer - $3000+ per academic year.  Must be in top 25% of graduating class and interested in attending the University of Alabama, Auburn University, or Vanderbilt University.  Contact number 334-382-3521.  Deadline:  May.

Greenville Kiwanis Club – Offering 2-$500 scholarships.  Requirements include 100+ hours of certified service within the last 12 months and a one-page essay about the service provided.  Applications will be available in the guidance office closer to due date.  Deadline:  May. 

Elizabeth Leckie Scholarship – Amount varied.  Must be a resident of Butler County.  Selection based on need and academic record.  Applications are available at the branch office of the Whitney Bank.  Interview required.  Deadline:  June.

Alpha Delta Kappa Mu Chapter Scholarship- applicant must be a high school senior planning to enter the field of education. See guidance counselor for more information. Deadline: April.

Susan G. Komen Scholarship- Scholarships awarded to qualified students who have lost a parent to breat cancer. Visit www.komen.org/grante for more information and application. Deadline: Feb.

Kids' Chance Scholarship Fund- Scholarships are provided for students whose parents have been killed or totally disabled in an on-the-job accident. Contact Tara Allison at (800)354-6154 or tallison@alfinc.org for more information. Deadline: May.

Alabama American Legion National High School Oratorical Scholarship Program- Students must enter the oratorical contest. Many universities offer scholarships to state level winners. Local and school contests are held in Jan.-Feb. See guidance counselor for more information.

Samsung American Legion Scholarship- High school juniors who participate in either an American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxillary Girls State program and are a direct descendant, i.e. child, grandchild, great-grandchild or a legally adopted child of a U.S. veteran. Applications are available at www.legion.org.

Daughters of the American Revolution DAR Good Citizens Program- A selected senior is chosen to apply. See guidance counselor for more information.

J. Craig and Page T. Smith Scholarship Foundation, Inc.- First in family scholarships. Must have a C+ average. Visit www.jcraigsmithfoundation.org.

Scholarship Opportunities by College/University

Appalachian State University – Contact the Office of Admissions/ Scholarships at ASU Box 32004, Boone, NC 28608-2004.  Deadline:  December.

University of Alabama - The University of Alabama offers many scholarships with a consolidated scholarship application. The Alumni Honors and Leadership scholarships usually have the earliest deadline of December 1.  Forms for these scholarships are included with the University of Alabama Admissions Application. Automatic offers will be based upon a 3.7 cumulative GPA along with at least a 27 ACT or 1200 SAT (math and verbal scores only).  Visit http://scholarships.ua.edu for more information.

University of Alabama Coca Cola First Generation Scholarships- student must be an Alabama resident, have a 3.0 GPA, and be admitted to University of Alabama. Visit www.scholarships.ua.edu.

University of Alabama in Birmingham – Visit www.uab.edu for information.  Deadline: March.

University of Alabama in Huntsville – UAH offers several scholarships to students.  The minimum qualifications include a 2.75 GPA and a 23 on the ACT.  To explore other scholarship opportunities, please visit www.uah.edu.

Auburn University – Students are automatically considered for scholarships provided they have a 27 ACT score, 3.0 GPA and have applied by December 1.  Many departments within Auburn University will have scholarships available as well.  Some of those applications can be obtained by contacting the department or by checking the departments’ websites at www.auburn.edu.

College of Agriculture (Auburn University) – Students interested in the field of Agriculture should visit this website for information concerning scholarship opportunities at Auburn University.  The website is: http://www.ag.auburn.edu.

Davidson College – Davidson’s John Montgomery Belk Scholarship program honors students with intellectual and personal success and significant leadership in their high school.  One nominee can be named from each school.  See the guidance counselor, if interested or visit www.davidson.edu/admission for further information.

Emory University – For the Emory Scholars Program, students must be nominated by the appropriate officials of their secondary schools.  Forms must be completed and arrive in the Emory Office of Admission by November 1.  For more information, visit www.emory.edu/college/students/scholars or see your guidance counselor.

Faulkner University – Faulkner offers many scholarships ranging from $500 to full tuition.  Please visit their website at www.faulkner.edu for more information.

University of Georgia - Georgia offers several scholarships including the prestigious Foundation Fellowship Program. Serious applicants for this award should have at least a 1350 SAT or 31 ACT score.  Many other scholarships are also available.  These scholarships are based on a combination of grades, scores, and activities.  Applicants must submit the combined application for admission and scholarship by November.  Please visit www.uga.edu for more information.

Georgia Institute of Technology - Offers the President’s Scholarship to approximately 75 entering freshmen. The scholarship typically awards $5,000 - $10,000 per year for 4 years.  Please visit http://www.psp.gatech.edu/for more information on this scholarship and www.scholarships.gatech.edu for other scholarships offered by Georgia Tech.  Deadline: October.

Huntingdon College – Huntingdon College offers scholarship to AISA State Winners from the Science Fair, Scholar’s Bowl, and Art Show Competitions along with providing other scholarship opportunities.  Visit www.huntingdon.edu for more information.  Deadline: December.

Jacksonville State University– JSU offers many different scholarships to incoming freshmen based on academic achievement and leadership.  Requirements start with an ACT composite score of 22 and the highest-level scholarships require an ACT score of 30, which pays full tuition.  Visit www.jsu.edu for more information or contact JSU at 1-800-231-5921.

Mercer – Visit www.mercer.edu for information.  Deadline: November.

Universities of Mississippi – Many scholarships and out of state tuition waivers are available. Students who wish to be considered for scholarships must file a University of Mississippi Admission Application, submit an ACT/SAT score and a transcript of grades through the first semester of their senior year.  Please visit www.olemiss.edu for more information.  Deadline: February.

Mississippi State University - Various scholarships are offered for students who have an ACT composite score of 24 or above or an SAT score of 1090 to 1150.  They also offer out-of-state fee waivers for students with a composite score of 26 or above or a combined SAT score of 1160 or above.  Visit www.sfa.msstate.edu for more information.

University of Montevallo – Montevallo offers many different scholarships, but the general requirements are an ACT score of 27 or higher and a 3.0 GPA.  For specific scholarship information visit www.montevallo.edu.  Deadlines vary, but the earliest is December 1st.

Reid State Technical College – Visit www.rstc.cc.al.us for information.

Rhodes College - We are invited to nominate students for the Hyde-Bellingrath Scholarships, which cover all costs for 4 years.  The finalists in the competition last year had an average GPA of 3.98, an average ACT composite score of 33, and average SAT I score of 1489 and held significant leadership positions in their schools and communities.  Other scholarships are also available.  Please visit www.rhodes.edu for more information.  Deadline: November.

University of South Alabama – USA offers several scholarships to entering freshmen.  The deadline for most of the scholarships is December 1.  Please visit www.southalabama.edu for more information.

Springhill College – The most prominent scholarships offered are the Spring Hill Scholars Full Tuition Scholarships.  They are awarded to freshmen with proven leadership qualities and outstanding character. Minimum requirements include a 3.4 GPA and a 27 ACT or 1200 SAT score. In order to be eligible, students must be admitted to Spring Hill by January.  Other scholarships are also available and can be located at www.shc.edu.

Troy University - Various scholarships are offered for students who have an ACT composite score of 22 (Leadership Scholarship) and above.  Also, certain TU departments (theatre, yearbook, etc.) offer scholarships as well.  Please visit www.troy.edu for more information.  Deadline: December.

Lurleen B. Wallace – Several scholarships are offered in different areas.  Visit www.lbwcc.edu for more information.  Deadline:  March.

Washington University in St. Louis – Looking for nominations for the Danforth Scholars Program at Washington University.  Deadline for nominations is October 15.  Applications for scholarships are due January.  See your guidance counselor for more information.

 Wasington and Lee University- several scholarships are offerred under the Johnson Program in Leadership and Integrity. To learn more visit www.wlu.edu.

University of West Alabama – UWA offers several scholarships beginning with an ACT composite score of 22, a “B” average and involvement in leadership positions.  Please visit www.uwa.edu for more information.

Additional Scholarship/Financial Aid Information

Free Application for Federal Student Aid - Federal Student Aid packets can be picked up in the guidance office, or you can get them online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  It is recommended that you apply online.  You will have your results in a timely manner and be able to check the status of your file online easily.  Applications are not to be submitted until after January 1, 2008.  Use the time in the fall to research the information so that completing the forms can be done during tax season. Also, the website is a great resource to learn about all the different types of loans and grants available.

NCAA Clearinghouse – If you are planning to participate in college athletics, you must complete an NCAA Clearinghouse form to be eligible. Forms are available from the athletic director or head coach.  You can visit their website at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net for more information.

Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services – Funding for college is available through the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services for students diagnosed with asthma, ADD and other disabilities.  Students must meet criteria in order to qualify.  Contact April B.
